Blepharitis & Meibomitis
Some Conditions Affect Eyelashes, Eyelids
Blepharitis and meibomitis are conditions of the eyelashes and eyelids that can cause itching, redness, irritation, burning, blurred vision and/or eye pain. These conditions may be associated with dry or watery eyes.
Blepharitis is due to accumulation of dry and/or dead skin cells in the eyelashes and at their base. Sometimes bacteria on the skin can infest the eyelashes and adjacent eyelid areas and aggravate the condition. This condition can be temporary or it can recur chronically.
Meibomitis is a condition where the glands in the eyelids near the eyelashes become plugged with solidified oil. The glands normally produce free flowing oil (or lipids), but when diseased, produce unhealthy waxes/oils that can cause the glands to become plugged.

Meibomitis
Warm compresses can help enhance healthy oil secretions and relieve symptoms.
In addition, your doctor may prescribe topical antibiotics (such as erythromycin or azithromycin) to help treat the conditions. Oral tetracyclines have both anti-infective and anti-inflammatory effects and can be beneficial.
Topical steroids may also be prescribed to help ocular inflammation. Supplementary dry eye treatment may be indicated.
